My dad had prostate cancer, and since it was detected early, he beat it! I remember being terrified. I was pregnant with my 2nd child when we found out. I remember sitting in the waiting room with my sisters, brother, grandmother and other family members while he had surgery. My daughter was born a few months after surgery, but because of the treatment plan he chose with his doctor, he was unable to hold my daughter for several months after her birth. But that was a small price to pay for his life.
A family friend I know had breast cancer. Although treatment was rough, she, too, beat her disease, but her disease hits close to home for me since I just turned 40. And I haven’t scheduled my mammogram yet. I had my first one a few years ago, and it was very uncomfortable. But that is s small price to pay in exchange for early detection of breast cancer. I just keep forgetting to schedule this mammogram appointment. I’m not sure why.
However, once I started to review some breast cancer facts, I realized that I can’t afford to put this off any longer. I have 2 daughters and I’d like to be around to watch them grow up.
I’ll make my appointment on Monday.
