My Friend with Autism is the exceptional result of parent Beverly Bishop’s determination to educate her son’s classmates about autism, thus helping her son fit in at school. A peer narrator explains that his friend with autism is good at some things and not so good at others—just like everyone else! In an informative, positive tone, he addresses issues such as sensory sensitivity, communication differences, unique ways of playing, insistence on routine, and more, all in an informative, positive tone.

At the end of the book are Page-by-Page Notes for Adults, which supplement the text with facts and explanations to further educate teachers and classmates’ parents.

The FREE companion CD contains a printable coloring page for every page of the book, including the Page-by-Page Notes for Adults and other features such as:

  • 18 Signs and Symptoms of an Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • 10 Quick Strategies for Helping a Child with Autism

My Thoughts about My Friend with Autism: Enhanced Edition with FREE CD of Coloring Pages!

This is a very good book which allows parents to introduce and explain autism to their children in a non-confrontational way. The Bishops show people that autistic children are different, but also that they’re special. I know that sometimes when a child (and many adults) are confronted with people with differences, we don’t know to act or react. Therefore, this book is a guide which helps children learn how to play side-by-side, how to communicate with an autistic child, and how to learn from them.

The illustrations are playful and fun, and the message is clear – autistic children are really good at certain things, great at other things, but have challenges as well – just like we all have. Their challenges, strengths, and weaknesses, may be in similar areas while we struggle, excel, or just need additional help, or they may be different. But that’s it.

I think the message in this book is powerful, and I also believe it’s timely.
