About Inside
INSIDE (MIRA Books, July 2011, $7.99), the new novel from New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Brenda Novak is the first book in the Bulletproof trilogy. Virgil Skinner served fourteen years for a murder he didn’t commit. He’s finally been exonerated, but he can’t escape the gang he joined in order to survive. They’ll do anything to keep him from telling what he knows. And if they can’t get to Virgil they’ll go after his sister and her kids. The California Department of Corrections needs someone to infiltrate another gang, one that’s taking control of the state’s most notorious supermax. Virgil’s the perfect candidate — and he’ll do it in exchange for his sister’s protection.
My Thoughts on Inside
I was on the edge of my seat reading this! From the very. first. page. Plus I loved the reference to Department 6, from Brenda Novak’s previous trilogy.
Peyton is a Chief Deputy Warden at a maximum security prison in California. Virgil Skinner went to jail at age 18 for a murder he didn’t commit, and has just been exonerated. But in order to keep his family safe, he must go back to prison to infiltrate a gang and collect information. Going back inside puts him at risk of being murdered himself, but he feels as if he has no choice, in order to keep his sister and her children safe. And no one seems to realize just how much in danger his sister is in, not even the people in charge of protecting her.
Peyton became Chief Deputy Warden because of her smarts, not because of her good looks or because she slept her way to the top. She’s not excited about putting Virgil back into the prison system, especially since she’s started to grow fond of him. But Virgil’s got some competition in that department, since he’s not the only one who is interested in Peyton.
Peyton not only has to watch out for Virgil’s back, but she needs to watch out for her own. Because there’s a snitch, and it doesn’t appear that the snitch is a prisoner. He’s likely one of her subordinates or one of her bosses. Or both. And the gang members will do anything to get back at Virgil. Including killing prison officials.
