About Love on Assignment

love-on-assignment-196x300 While Charlotte is focusing on uncovering sordid information on columnist Daniel Wilmot, her heart leads her into uncharted territory.

During the summer of 1900 Charlotte Hale, a native Newporter and secretary for the Rhode Island Reporter, accepts an undercover assignment as a temporary governess to Daniel Wilmont’s children in order to secretly gather evidence against him. As he helps her rediscover God, Charlotte learns that Daniel is an honorable man. They unexpectedly fall in love despite their different backgrounds and social positions. Charlotte soon realizes she must defend Daniel against the forces set against him—a willful student with a romantic crush and the newspaper editor determined to destroy his reputation.

My Thoughts on Love on Assignment

After reading the first book in the “Ladies of Summerhill” series, Love on a Dime, and loving it, I had such high expectations for Love on Assignment. Unfortunately, I didn’t like it as well as I liked the first one. I empathized with the main character, Charlotte Hale, and the fact that she had to take a job, even if it wasn’t ideal, in order to keep a roof over her family’s head. I completely understand that. I even liked how the main characters from Love on a Dime made their way into this book, so the reader was able to get a glimpse of their life since their story ended.

I liked how Charlotte’s character originally didn’t know God, and we were allowed to watch her growth. The other characters were fully developed, and the story was fun, and even very funny in many places. But the story itself was a little awkward. It was if the author had a hard time getting all of the pieces of the puzzle to fit together in the right way in order to make the story flow smoothly. Like the previous book, I didn’t want to put it down – but it was more from curiosity about how it ends, instead of because of the fact that I really enjoyed the ride. I wish I had enjoyed it more.
